Esteban Vicente. Thresholds of Light
About the plan
The exhibition 'Esteban Vicente. Thresholds of Light' pays tribute to one of the most unique and prominent figures in 20th-century painting, the artist Esteban Vicente (Turégano, Segovia, 1903 - Bridgehampton, 2001). This exhibition is presented at Espacio La Granja in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, offering an in-depth look at the career of a painter who forged a bridge between European tradition and the renewal of contemporary American painting.
Initially trained at the Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Fernando de Madrid, Vicente immersed himself in the cultural circles of the Generación del 27 and explored the European avant-garde during his travels to Paris. His work went through a phase influenced by the Mediterranean landscape, especially during his stay in Ibiza. However, the outbreak of the Civil War led him to settle in New York, a key city in his artistic evolution.
During the 1940s, he began a decisive transformation towards abstraction, using Cubism and collage to deconstruct pictorial space. In the 1950s, he joined the New York School and abstract expressionism, developing a distinctive language focused on colour, light, transparencies, and spatial organisation. For Vicente, abstraction was a way of transforming reality, maintaining the landscape as memory, atmosphere, and structure. In addition to his artistic legacy, he was an influential professor at prestigious American institutions and received significant accolades in both the United States and Spain.
If you're looking for things to do in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, don't miss this exhibition at Espacio La Granja on 28/02.
