The Golden Dragon, by Péter Eötvös
About the plan
Ópera de Tenerife presents, as part of its 'Ópera en minúscula' pre-season, the striking work The Golden Dragon, composed by the renowned Hungarian musician and conductor Péter Eötvös. This opera is an adaptation of the contemporary tragedy of the same name by Roland Schimmelpfennig, considered the most internationally performed living German author. The work stands out for its grotesque tone, a powerful social critique, and intelligent humour that softens its starkness. This new production by Auditorio de Tenerife will premiere at Teatro Leal in San Cristóbal de La Laguna.
The plot unfolds one night in a multi-storey building, focusing on a young Chinese woman suffering from a terrible toothache in the kitchen of 'El Dragón de Oro' restaurant (serving Thai, Chinese, and Vietnamese food). Without a residence permit or money, and with her sister missing, she finds it impossible to see a dentist. Her colleagues, faced with the situation, decide to pull her tooth. This story intertwines with the complex experiences of other residents in the same building, reflecting a stark social reality.
Interspersed throughout the opera is the classic fable of the cicada and the ant, but with a dark twist: the cicada asks the ant for help for winter, and the ant exploits her, first forcing her to work for free and then into prostitution. The situation escalates when an 'ant grandfather' pulls off her antennae and, later, an 'ant boyfriend' seriously injures her, accentuating the critical and grotesque tone of the work.
