Pedro, a Rebellion of Silences

The play 'Pedro, una rebeldía de silencios' is presented at the Teatro Leal in San Cristóbal de La Laguna. This theatrical production takes as its starting point the tribute paid by the La Joven Poesía Canaria collective on 19 September 1980 at the Círculo de Bellas Artes de Santa Cruz de Tenerife, featuring prominent figures such as Domingo Pérez Minik and Eduardo Westerdahl. The piece seeks to unravel the apparent contradiction between rebellion and silence that defines the poet, whose title and essence are drawn from one of his own verses.

The show offers a deep dive into the author's work and the key historical moments he was involved in. It explores his social and political commitment against local bossism, manifested through his work as a journalist and public official during the Segunda República. It also addresses his active participation in the artistic avant-garde movements, the terrible experiences as a prisoner during the Guerra Civil, the forced silence during the Francoist repression, and his role as a civic and human model in the early democratic transition. Divided into four chronobiographical blocks, the play dramatically summarises a life dedicated to words and their power to free the people of these islands, always with a gaze inspired by the sea and a universalist vocation.
