The Reineta Apple: Queen of the Mid-Altitude Lands

The municipality of El Sauzal, renowned for its rich agricultural culture and diverse landscapes, will celebrate its 'Queen of the Mid-Altitude Lands' – the Reineta Apple – throughout October 2026. This large, round fruit, with its bittersweet flavour and greenish or yellow skin speckled with spots, is one of the most prominent crops in the mid-altitude regions of northern Tenerife, where 'horizontal rain' (posma) promotes its growth. El Sauzal is the island's main producer, with over 27 hectares dedicated to its cultivation, which has prevented its disappearance in Tenerife. The Town Council dedicates this month to the Reineta apple with a series of activities, including gastronomic events, technical workshops, day and night routes among apple trees, and an annual educational programme for local students.

This event offers a magical experience for both young people and adults, combining knowledge of the Reineta apple's history in the municipality with theatrical performances, hiking, and tastings. It's a unique opportunity to connect with Canarian agricultural tradition.

From Thursday 1 to Friday 23 October

• Submissions open for the 11th Reineta Apple Photography Contest 2026.

From Monday 19 to Thursday 22 October

• Mornings: Hiking Routes among Apple Trees for Schoolchildren, including visits to cultivation fields and the Posma cider winery in Ravelo.

Saturday 24 October

• 18:00: 'Halloween Night' Hike among Apple Trees. The route will take place through the Ravelo mountainside, starting from the Ravelo Farmers' Market. It includes an explanation of Reineta apple cultivation and 'Halloween Night' themed surprises. Spaces are limited. Saturday 31 October

• 18:00: Awards Ceremony for the 11th Reineta Apple Photography Contest of Tenerife 2026 in the Plenary Hall.
