Monga

The Auditorio de Tenerife presents the innovative performance Monga at La Salita, created by Brazilian actress and director Jéssica Teixeira. In this work, Teixeira uses her own body as the primary source for dramaturgical and stage research, exploring new forms of expression.

Monga (2024) is her second piece, following her first work, E.L.A. (2019). This time, the artist dares to challenge classical historical narratives, offering a non-sensationalist review of the past, breaking down myths to build new possible imaginaries. The performance is inspired by the life of Julia Pastrana, a unique 19th-century Mexican artist and singer who suffered from generalised congenital hypertrichosis, a condition that covered her body and face with hair. As a tribute and evocation, Jéssica Teixeira aims to dance, perform and sing, recreating the essence of the Mexican artist.
