ESTHER CABEZA: Tales of the Departed. Life and Death Hand in Hand 30/10 - 20h

Renowned writer Esther Cabeza presents her show "Historia de finados. La vida y la muerte de la mano" at Teatro Unión Tejina, an emotional narrative exploring the traditions and memory of the Canary Islands.

The work transports us to early 20th-century Anaga, where a humble family celebrates the eve of All Souls' Day (Noche de Finados), upholding their traditions, honouring their departed, and preserving the memory of their roots. Through stories told in the warmth of their home, it portrays life as it once was, reaching back up to 200 years.

These tales, imbued with magical realism, captivate the audience. A diverse cast of characters parades through them, including watchmen, orchilleros (lichen gatherers), fishermen, tibicenas (mythical dog-like creatures), luminaries, shipwreck survivors, pirate ships, the historic final voyage of the Balvanera, witches, healers, innkeepers, priests, lost and blessed souls, the reborn, those who returned, emigrants, and rural teachers.

The narrative underscores the importance of family and its legacy, the need to normalise life's transitions, and the relevance of keeping Canary Islands' roots alive – a melting pot of cultures with a rich history that deserves to be told.

Tickets are priced at €10.
