Rosary Prayer at the Capilla de Cruz de Lucio
Sobre el plan
El Sauzal municipality invites you to take part in the Rosary Prayer that will take place at the historic Capilla de Cruz de Lucio, located at Calle Real Orotava, No. 232, in the Ravelo neighbourhood. This religious event will be held on Tuesday, 8 September 2026, at 18:00, coinciding with the feast day of the Virgen de la Luz.
Virgen de la Luz, an advocation of deep devotion, is venerated as "Light and guide" for walkers and travellers, "Light and wisdom", and "Sun of justice" or "light of good governance". Her iconography traditionally depicts her holding a candle in one hand and the Child Jesus in the other, an image associated with the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple, where he was proclaimed "a light to enlighten the nations", and which connects with the Candelaria festival. The devotion and iconography of the Virgen de la Luz have seen different interpretations throughout history, reflected in numerous variations revolving around her primary meaning, although her representation can sometimes be confused with that of the Candelaria.
The Capilla de Cruz de Lucio, built in 1917, is a place of great historical significance in Ravelo. Inside, the image of Nuestra Señora de La Luz is venerated, which was the first Marian image to arrive at the temple in 1917, even serving as a church for weddings until the construction of the current parish in 1984. Popular tradition says that the Virgin owes her advocation to the late arrival of electricity (light) to this neighbourhood, and the devotion she inspired was such that festivals were held in her honour even before the neighbourhood had its own parish church. After years of diminished prominence, the Ravelo Parish has regained its presence in the festivities since 2021, with the intention that the image of the Virgen de la Luz preside over the parish alongside the Cruz de Lucio and the Cruz de San Cristóbal during the Fiestas de Ravelo. The Capilla’s name, Cruz de Lucio, comes from the promise of a benefactor who brought the bells, still resounding, from Cuba, and which will chime this day to celebrate the festivity. Masses in the Capilla take place on the first Wednesday of each month, at 18:00.
Don't miss this traditional festival event in El Sauzal on 8 September. If you're looking for things to do in North Tenerife, this is a cultural and religious event of great value.
