Hearts of Tejina

The San Bartolomé Hearts Festival is one of the most deeply rooted traditions in Tejina, a charming village within the municipality of San Cristóbal de La Laguna. This iconic celebration, declared a Site of Cultural Interest and recognised with the prestigious CICOP International Award, spans the entire month of August.

The main day of the festival is 24 August, but preparations and activities begin much earlier. The three historic districts of the village —El Pico, Calle Arriba, and Calle Abajo— dedicate weeks to the artisanal creation of impressive structures known as 'corazones' (hearts). These ephemeral works of art can reach up to 12 metres in height and are meticulously decorated with natural elements such as bread, fruit, flowers, and sweets, showcasing the community's creativity and effort.

The culmination of the festival is the entry of the 'Corazones' into the Church square, which traditionally takes place on the Sunday before 24 August. The festive atmosphere is complemented by a comprehensive programme of over 50 events for all ages, including:

• Opening speech
• Traditional pilgrimages
• Open-air dances to enjoy music and dancing
• Firework displays
• Procession in honour of San Bartolomé
• The Fiesta de los Corazones Chicos (Children's Hearts Festival), which concludes the celebrations on the last weekend of August.
