Traditional Celebration of the San Nicolás Festival 2026

Jueves, 10 de septiembre de 2026 (17h) · El Sauzal

The traditional celebration of the San Nicolás festival returns to the municipality of El Sauzal on Thursday 10 September 2026. The events will take place in the emblematic Plaza de San Nicolás, located at Herrera Street, number 5, from 17:00 to 23:00. Admission is free for all attendees.

This event is organised by the Colectivo vecinal de San Nicolás and the Ayuntamiento de El Sauzal, with the valuable collaboration of the municipality's bakeries. Although the detailed programme will be announced soon and is subject to possible modifications, a day full of tradition and a festive atmosphere is expected.

As part of the celebration, important recommendations are included for pet care during the fireworks display, which will not exceed 5 minutes in duration. It is advised to note the day and time of the display, take pets to a place where they feel safe and protected, and ensure the animal is accompanied.

The festival honours San Nicolás de Tolentino (1245-1305), an Italian Augustinian friar, mystic, and the first saint of his order. He is revered as the protector of souls in Purgatory and an intercessor for justice, motherhood, childhood, and health, also being invoked against plagues. The tradition of the 'Miraculous Breads' dates back to San Nicolás's healing through the intercession of the Virgin Mary, after which he blessed and distributed bread among the sick—a practice that is still maintained today at his sanctuary, granting numerous favours and graces.

The ermita de San Nicolás, built at the beginning of the 17th century, is a prominent point of interest in the celebration. Located in a small square and facing the sea, this single-nave building with a gabled Arab tile roof and basalt, lime, and mud masonry walls, houses a solid coffered ceiling inside and a small wooden bell tower. Its corners are regularised, providing greater stability to the structure. Masses in the ermita are celebrated on the second Saturday of each month at 17:30.

Don't miss this traditional celebration of Fiestas tradicionales / Romerías in El Sauzal on 10/09, a unique opportunity to experience Canarian customs in North Tenerife.
