Acerina Amador
About the plan
The moving play Anacaona is presented at the emblematic Teatro Leal in San Cristóbal de La Laguna. This project, conceived and performed by Acerina Amador in collaboration with Fernando López, emerged from the discovery of a salsa song dedicated to the brave Taíno princess Anacaona, who in 1503 chose to be hanged rather than become the concubine of a Castilian conqueror.
Anacaona has become a symbol of unwavering resistance for indigenous peoples and Caribbean women, transcending the borders of what are now the Dominican Republic and Haiti. Her inspiration reached 19th-century independence movements, as José Martí well remembered, and even named a famous Cuban son orchestra composed exclusively of women.
Acerina Amador and Fernando López delve into this genealogy of memory, finding close resonances in the Canary Islands. The play seeks to recover silenced female figures in the islands to tell the stories of women who, throughout history, have confronted colonial powers. The performance is scheduled for 15 September 2026 at 20:30. Tickets are chargeable.
